It is called The Low Concept Anthology, brought to you by the fine folks and members of E.O.C. Not only does it have a diverse cast of Indie artists but part of the proceeds go to the very worthy cause of "Extreme Recess," a Chicago program for kids with disabilities.

Again I am very proud to have been chosen to be apart of this book,(see page 67 for my contribution) the b&w version of the "Red Summer" cover, by Eric Williams. Came out much better than I had hoped!

I would be remiss if I failed to mention the awesome job of editing that Mr. Jon Westhof (King Bone Press) did in editing this project.

I met Jeff Jones a long time ago at the now defunct Atlanta Fantasy Fair, he was a kind and gentle being, a fellow artist and myself caught up with him between the hotel and showroom floor. After embarrassing ourselves by doing the Bill & Ted, I mustered up the courage to show him, a painted piece, I had just finished. I fumbled and fiddled with this huge case and since he was heading to his table, he paused for but a moment. He gave me this little unassuming ticket with his address on it, and said, when I have something that I am proud of, I should send it to him! I NEVER had the chance. Then as now, I'm still not worthy! But I will keep trying!

A Red Summer preview

So a few months ago, before my computer crashed I was contacted by Eric Williams. Eric is a really cool and creatively prolific writer, he also listens to SiDEBAR, where he learned that both Adrian and I are artist. He contacted us both to find out if we would be interested in doing some work for him in the EOC(Eleven O'Clock Comics) anthology, that will be coming out soon. He sent us both several synopsis and I responded well to "RED SUMMER". I will leave the details for Eric to explain(he does a better job of it),lets just say, it involves a actual event that took place a while ago, involving lynching and burning of Willie Brown. Needless to say this is a very tough subject matter and I didn't want to trivialize his story or the event with some random and uneventful imagery. Eric was a great to work with and I really enjoyed our simple interaction. Looking forward to possibly bringing this story to full fruition.

I think I can say,I've pushed this as far as I can go right now. I added a few more elements, like, another monolith semi-transparent on the left in the clouds. The shadow statue temple has a glowing jewel, and just beneath this shadowy figure is a serpentine creature, that uses the terrain to blend in before attacking. Of course the energy weapon the character is wielding which casts light in the appropriate(hopefully)manner.

The Legendary Green Hornet and Kato!!
I watched a Marathon on TV, it struck me, just how dimly lit, some of the action sequences were and while the camera should have focused on Bruce Lees Martial Genius, it was instead on Van Williams. VW did a pretty good job at the choreography. But the show suffered from the long drawn out, plots and exposition. But it was mostly enjoyable!

I put in a few faint transitional clouds, some steam and flesh tones to make certain areas pop. Here are two Sketches that I did for my SiDEBAR, siblings this year in our Year End roundtable on the show. The first I gave to Adrian, this Sketch of Big Barda, over looked by Darkseid and Granny Goodness, was done with Prismacolor marker and ballpoint. The second is, "Who knows what evil that lurks in the hearts of men? The Shadow knows!" One of my man Swain's favorite characters The Shadow, done using graphite sticks. While both are finished sketches, I am kind of feeling the urge to put a digital twinge on both, definitely Barda.

In this update I decided to give a closer look at some of the details and adjustments that I made. Inazuma Tiger made the suggestion that I loose the gloves and show flesh. I like the gauntlets from the other version but I do agree that the hands give a certain quite yet martial resolve so I changed them, of course every small adjustment demands another assessment and perhaps another change but, its fun and so cool. Sketches By Comparison

Okay, so last week Steve Jobs Apple's illustrious CEO, and all around inventive spirit announced the advent of the, drum roll iPAD, and a lot of us where underwhelmed. I remain optimistic but, explorative in my approach to the impending release. While I will not be the first to get this new device, I'll be waiting for next generation. In the images here I have used the three highest rated Art Applications that will be available to use with it.

If any of you have watched the Apple Keynote, you will have noticed that one app. in particular had the rather envious position of being the best of the bunch, to utilize to create skillful and competent works of art. I will just state for the record right now, that while Brushes is not a worthless program, it most certainly is not any where near the level of technical accessibility or adjustablity, that the other two programs have.

The other two didn't receive notice or accolades, which is curious because in my opinion, because they have so much more to offer.

The Three programs(Apps.) I used to create these works are: Brushes, Layers, and Autodesk's Sketchbook mobile. While they all have there individual shortcomings, I found that Brushes to be the most incomplete and dissatisfying. I'll explain, to me part of the beauty of these programs is the ability to export your work in a file format that you can then, continue to manipulate Layers and Sketchbook both do this very well in the form of layered PSD files or flattened JPG. Brushes also exports in two formats Png and brushes, a proprietor file that allows you to play back with a separate but free player available on the Brushes site viewer. The other major disadvantage with this program is the only way to convert these images is thru a WiFi connection, that either converts the file to be used in the player or helps it maintain the suffix of .brushes that is already there.

So after much frustration and rather diligent research I contacted the developer and was told that for right now, the only way to export the file was in fact WiFi.

Moving Forward with New tools

So here we are at the end of the begining of the end of the month. I know there is a thinly veiled Smashing Pumpkin reference at play, and I just slaughtered it. I love that song and, all of the portents it gives. Struggle with ones inner being outer is admirable, and can be quite entertaining to watch.
That being said, here are a few sketches and ideas that I have been closely working on an trying to develop in to a increased work flow.
I made a New Years Art Resolution on the SiDEBAR art forum that said, basically I would do a good sketch a week. Well time once again has flown by me so, I am forced to just to release FOUR at a time.

I recently purchased a iPhone and these sketches were made on several of those apps available for it. The idea for me at least is to use the best of them as a basis for other drawings, paintings etc. Let me know what you like to see as far as process and exploration goes, as I just instinctually do what I can to move forward and stay inspired.

To all my friends and supporters here is a little something I did many moons ago, it feels appropriate that I share this with you all now. As we step into a new decade an venture into hopefully new directions. My own personal changes will be made willingly for the most part. I confess that when I first did this page using every tool at my disposal from brush to technical pen and ballpoint. I thought about coloring it, and still might next year. The results did not meet my expectation to say the least, I recall hating it.(ha) Now upon this eve I find a certain charm and eagerness in its execution. Desaturated Space

This piece was done late last year for a competition on CG channel, I got a little carried away on the color dynamics at the time and to be honest, even though I was glad to complete it, and the results were okay. I never really cared for the non harmonic color choices, that I did at that time.

So here it is again, stripped of all color, so I can just focus on composition which also needs a lot of help anyway. I will play with this some more, probably realize the two central characters in Zbrush and play with the tech some as well.

Firstly, thanks for taking the time to stop by, I hope to make it worth your while and that you find something of merit here. Thanks to all my friends and colleagues for the many years of criticism and support.

Secondly, I am so thick at times, I meander around the obvious conclusion like, a driedel spinning on the polished suburban floor in Middle America. I am prone to be inspired or mired by flights of fancy that I react to but, usually fizzle out and sputter to a halt, not from inspiration mind you but from the shear weight of the colossus in my mind that I am trying to move. Later realizing it’s all a matter of perception and that particular idea was probably small to most anyway.

So what am I doing here, why am I exposing myself now, in this way?

Its quite simple really, I have been inspired to come out of my shell, and re-focus.

You see I have been doing this podcast with a very close friend of mine for several years now called, SiDEBAR. Together, Swain and I have interviewed some of the most immense luminaries in the field of visual arts. Quite like the solar winds across mythic saturnine plain, I have felt the intensely saturating heat of possibility and yearning to study, experiment and accomplish again.

I hope my thoughts and practices from this point will not be met with Icarian fate.

Well if you have ever heard of “Once bitten”, I am going to add to that twice chewed.

As this spark hopefully turns into a flame in short order, I would like to share my journey with those who care.

In the true nature of this on line experience/blogosphere I am going to relate to you the triumphs and travails of my non-sequitur process.

Why Jaded Yolk?

I have this acute fondness for the double entendre and the natural coloring of minerals and the like. I also have this need to verbalize and construct tangible and representational visuals, and using certain words can cause me to crystallize very specific ideas inside my mind. My definition of Jaded Yolk is the critical process in which in spite of tremendous obstacles one can feed and thrive on an internal source of nutrients. Which can be galvanized into a considerable and palpable energy to make change.

See I told you I was thick.

So against the grain I go, trying to squeeze out some of the optical overload I have absorbed in my many years of examining, and creating art in one form or another.
